Cheap place to fix laptops

Options
The hinge has come off my laptop, I asked at the shop and PC world and they said the motherboard needs to be replaced and the casing bought which is difficult as the make of my laptop is discontinued, general quotes were around £90.

Does anyone know where I can get the hinges fixed for cheaper than this, or even a short term solution in the meantime like some sort of laptop glue. I'm also thinking of getting the casing from a non-working laptop for parts. Any suggestions?

    Short of trawling ebay for a specific part, then yes a whole non-working donor lappy is your best bet for the parts...the mobo is standard PCW reply to a request they have no chance in fixing (unless there's another fault you haven't mentioned....)

    make & model of said lappy??

  • Depending on what the laptop is then £90 could be a fairly good price. Hinges can be a real pig to get to on some laptops.

    Thanks, I believe it's a Sony Vaio T15 ultrabook, here are pictures I took of the hinges:

    Please find the Model No. (on the base) as there are several T15's. Should read:
    SVT15XXXXXXX - where each "X" is a digit or a letter.

    Then there may be a manual available from the Sony website at:

    I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

    Yeah that isn't going to be cheap. That's not just a broken hinge, its broken base plastics as well at the very least so basically the entire bottom of the laptop is going to need to be taken apart and moved into a new case in addition to the hinge being repaired. Basically the entire laptop is going to need to be disassembled. That's a good 2/3 hours labour for someone who has a lot of experience taking laptops apart, 4/5 for someone who doesn't. £90 all in including parts is a very fair price.

    TBH, if that's it, I'd take the hdd and RAM out, maybe sell the carcass as spares/repair on ebay, and put the £90 and whatever you get for it towards another lappy. £100 can get a reasonable 2nd hand machine :)

    The hinges are broke and PC world say you need a new motherboard !!

    You couldn't make that up!!
  • That's really bad damage. If the hinges got reduced to that state, I'd look to use those £90 for a refurbished business-grade machine which won't get that kind of damage as business laptops are usually sturdy.

    Your Sony ultrabook has really shocking build quality unless you really mistreated that machine.

    So buy a new laptop seems to be the verdict (and probably a harddrive for back up) :(

    @GunJack & AndyPix
    I didn't think it was that bad, I thought, can't they just glue/weld it back on somehow. Will taking the HDD and Ram out be difficult?

    @BadBehaviour
    Cared for it well with the worst being carrying it around in my back pack rather than the laptop bag for a period, putting in sony vaio and hinge does bring up quite a few results of broken ones in google, I'll start looking for refurbished business grade machines instead then, any good places to buy, not too keen on ebay

    It will take you about 5 mins to remove the hard drive and RAM.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
