Is this quote fair?

Options
Hi,

I've put up a job on Mybuilder.com which basically involves painting the ceiling of the downstairs toilet (1.5m x 1.1m) and touching up a corner from ceiling to the floor shown in the picture below.

There was a leak from the upstairs bathroom which caused the staining. That was fixed a few weeks ago so it's all dry now.

It needs to be done urgently (tomorrow, Saturday) so I assume decorators will charge a premium for the same.

I've got a few all inclusive quotes ranging from £110 to £150. I have absolutely no idea what a fair price is for this. The last time I had a decorator over was a year ago for fixing wallpaper on one wall which took about 2 hours and cost me £80.

Would be grateful to hear your thoughts on whether £110 is a fair price?

Thanks,

K

It probably is fair given that someone has to actually come out and do it on a Saturday and it could detract from another job, but if I were ever going to take on a DIY job it would be that one.

Why on earth MUST it be done on one particular day? It doesn't sound that urgent a job to me.

Guests coming over on Sunday and my partner (who's been nagging me to get this done for weeks now) has given me an ultimatum that this needs to be all neat and tidy by eod tomorrow, or else!

That is ridiculous. Do you have royalty coming? If you’re going to do it yourself then just do it, it won't take long but if you’re getting someone in to do it then you won't find someone at this short notice.

As mentioned in my post, I HAVE already got multiple quotes for it to be done tomorrow on mybuilder.com. From past experience, there is no dearth of tradesmen in NE London.

  • I think ideally you would wantto repaint the whole room as it will be obvious that parts are freshly painted.

Not being funny, but if someone told me a job had to be done tomorrow and not any other day if I didn't turn them down flat I would probably charge them about triple the normal price.

Drying times will be the problem it will need scraping back of any loose paint, filling then a stain block then painting, even though it is a small job it will take best part of a day with drying times
  • Thankfully, tradesmen out here aren't all like that ;) I go on Mybuilder.com andpost my job giving details and specifying when I'd like it done. Tradesmen who are interested give me a ballpark quote, I look at their previous reviews and hire one.

I've hired the decorater who quoted £110, he knocked £10 off for accommodating his request to start at an ungodly hour is the morning and so I'll get the work done tomorrow! Thanks all for your help.
