Stair treads - recommendations?

Hi all,
We finally have this weekend free and have time to tackle the stairway.
It's currently stripped back to bare wooden stairs and lime green walls (yuk) with an oak banister that needs re-fixing to the walls.
In order to get maximum impact for minimal cost we are planning on painting the walls white, the banister black (to match the wall fixings) and doing 'something' with the stairs.
But we are stuck. Have thought of carpeting but not keen. Someone told me about laminate but i'm unsure about what the edges will look like and how difficult it would be with normal/cheap laminate.
I have fallen in love with an imagine on Pinterest where they have black treads and risers which have been painted with a black/white chevron pattern.
OK, not to everyone's taste but it's our house
Painting the current stairs is possible BUT would only be a short-term fix. The very small landing space is bare floorboards and the bottom step has a split in it. There are metal fixings between the tread/riser on some of the steps that we are not sure if from the previous carpet or structural.
Has anyone got any experience/recommendations for stair treads? What is the most effective and low-cost way to achieve this?
We are DIY-savvy to a certain point!

Are the treads in good condition? You could sand them, paint them and have a nice runner fitted (you'd only need to paint the exposed sides).
Laminate or wooden flooring can look good on stairs if done properly. Quick Step do profiles made for stair nosings.

Thanks!
The treads are in OK condition, except the bottom one and the top of the stairs.
I was thinking of laminate, but as i want to paint the risers it seems silly to buy expensive and paint over it?
Quick step looks easy to install... but expensive :eek:0 -

Do you know if you can buy the tread/nose on it's own from quickstep? Or is it a case of buying the riser too in order for it to fit?
Seems silly for me to buy an expensive kit, if i will be painting ridiculous patterns onto the risers
We can probably measure, paint and fit the risers with some basic MDF/hardboard.0 -

There aren't special treads or risers, you just use their normal planks. Not all Quick Step ranges are expensive though the better more realistic ones are worth the money IMO.0 -
You could carpet just the treads for a really nice effect.0
