Hi,
Im currently with sse fixed for a year and its due up in April 16th and received an email asking to review my plan.
I done a U switch copmarison and sse are no longer the cheapest and e-on cam up as cheaper. I have never switched before so i am new to this and after some advice if possible please? Apparently i have to wait 49 days before the end of my fixed date not to receive and early exit fee? Do i contact the new supplier direct to switch or contact sse first to say im leaving? Also i have a smart sse meter so will the new supplier give me one or will i use the one i got?
Thanks

Your present supplier is required to notify you that your fixed term contract is coming to an end in the period 49 to 42 days before your contract end date. You are then free to switch without the threat of an exit fee.
I am not sure how you have calculated that E.oN is good value for money. You need to do a full market comparison using your annual usage in kWhs/year. Ignore any savings shown on comparison sites: look at what you are paying now and compare it to the annual cost of any new tariffs.
You can switch in 2 ways.
1. Via a switching site such as MSE Cheap Energy Club. You may be entitled to cash back.
2. Directly with your chosen supplier.
The new supplier manages all aspects of the switch. There is no need to tell your present supplier that you are leaving. The new supplier will ask for meter readings at the appropriate time. This will need to be taken manually.
As far as your smart meter is concerned, this will lose its connectivity. You will have to read it manually. There are plans to 'orphan' these meters on to the new Data Communications Company by 2020. This will allow all suppliers to see your meter readings and the meter will stay smart on switch.0 -
Thanks for the reply.
I just put in what I pay monthly and went from there. Guess I should x the usage per month and x12 so will give me a figure I presume? Think I will try and gain via mse and go from there and see what results are given.
Thought surely if got a smart meter then the new provider would supply one?0 -

1. Not all suppliers are supporting/supplying "smart" meters yet.
2. The Utility cos. who are installing smart ,are doing it area by area and generally not by request.
3. SSE should have supplied you with your annualised gas/leccy consumption - you will find it somewhere on the bills -use these annual figures to get the best comparisons.:)0 -

Use the actual figures for the year - not 12 x a month.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Ok thanks. Will I have an actual one on my bill??0

Instead of the money paid in the last 12 months, I would use the number of units of power to calculate the cost of the best new deal from your present provider and compare with those for other companies.
In past years I've found the 'possible' saving to be too small to bother moving. In one case it was £5.0 -

Your bill should give you an annual usage projection in kWhs. As stated above, please don't attempt to do a price comparison based on £s. It will give you false results as the cheapest deal varies with usage (in kWhs/year) and postcode. If the information is not on your bill, ring your present supplier and ask for the Estimated Annual Consumption (electricity) and Annual Quantity(gas) for your property. This is historical data which is updated at least once per year. The two figures that you are given will be in kWhs/year.0 -
Gonna ring Sse up in the week to see what they calculate my annual usage based on my January updated bill. Done what Sse approx usage from December bill and the results come up with providers I have never heard of?0

The market has been opened up to a large number of new suppliers. In the event of a supplier failure Ofgem will appoint a new supplier and you will be transferred to that supplier on your existing tariff terms. All credit balances are now protected.0 -
Brilliant thanks. Went through mse energy club and got results from there.0
