regardless of engine, the diesels that cost their owners big bucks are almost always either a) neglected or b) bought for the wrong driving profile

This. I run diesels, I service them to the manufacturers schedule, even my last MK3 Mondeo at 160k and 8 years old was serviced by the local Ford dealer to the proper schedule having a major service at 150k, and I don't do short journeys other than a once a week trip to the shop. Never had an EGR problem, never had one burn oil, never had one have to have a spanner put anywhere near the engine save for servicing.

Even local taxi companies have worked out that diesels are the wrong cars for the job so they run petrol cars for town work and have a couple of diesels for airport runs.

the age of the vehicle bears no relationship to the repair costs. Value of repair yes but costs no. If the same repairs were needed on an identical 1yr old car or a 10yr old one then the costs would be the same.
17hrs labour as someone else said is a huge chunk of what is not an unrealistic quote.

OP, a new EGR for one of these engines is a lot more than £250. That is why my local garage always suggests using a fuel-based cleaner and avoiding supermarket diesel as an alternative to replacing or removing the EGR.

They are right in 98 out of 100 cases.
