I currently have 4 as it is, 3 of them are unused though?
    Thanks

The 3 unused a/cs could be 'groomed' and then sent off to get a switch bonus payment!
    I wouldn't be closing them......

I remember reading that Nationwide are working on introducing a new system that doesn't need the card reader, which would be very welcome. I just wish I could change my login username to something more memorable. Have been trying to memorise it for months, but still have to refer back to my welcome letter each time i log on.

Nationwide changed their login process last night - it still requires the same information but it's laid out differently and all on the same page. If they are considering an alternative to the card reader (which I don't bother to use to log in) this may be a first step toward it.

Why are you only looking at First Direct or Halifax?
What is the issue with NatWest & other accounts you have?

I wouldn't personally move to a bank just for a mortgage, nor is it needed, just look for the best deals.

Keep, at least two current accounts, but more won't hurt.

I'd guess for the switching bonus, which is why I'm in the process of moving my defunct Flexdirect to Halifax. Although as the OP hasn't mentioned that it may not have featured as a reason at all, in which case everything you say is valid.
