Went over credit limit but paid off same day - will it affect anything?

Hey guys,

So I hit a bit of a rough patch lately, and although I'm back to normality, I incurred a rather large debt on my credit card. It's a Halifax Clarity Card.

Long story short, Halifax texted me telling me I was over my limit, and so I paid a massive chunk of what I owe, the same day as receiving that text.

My question is, will this affect my otherwise impeccable credit report negatively?

I had an issue with Very years back, where I owed a delivery charge which I assumed was included in a buy now pay later deal, and missed that payment deadline, but they don't report it to the credit agencies until you've missed it a second time. This is why I wonder if Halifax are just as lenient as I paid it off the same day as receiving the text.

I'd be very angry with myself if I put a negative factor on my credit score, but, of course, it's my own fault.

Thanks everyone :)

Unlikely. But Halifax should be able to tell you for sure.

Did they send the text before the next statement was produced?

If you've had the next statement, is there a £12 fee on there?

My statement was issued on the 7th, I received the text yesterday, on the 8th.

What pushed it over was a purchase I made which was charged to the credit card when I meant to charge it to the debit card. This purchase was made late on the 7th, around 10pm.

You may get lucky with the £12 fee. As to whether it'll be reported, then only Halifax can answer that (depends whether they report balance as at statement date, max during statement month, or something else). The fact you paid it promptly (when reminded!) can only help. Suggest you ring them.
  • No doubt if they charged you £12, they'll refund on request for a "first offence". Perhaps if you call them you can ask them to increase the limit.

You say you have an "impeccable" record. That may be so in terms of never having missed a payment/gone over your limit before. But it might be less than good for other reasons - eg close to limits, only paying minimums, overall outstanding high etc. And all this only matters when you apply for new credit - in which case there might be other things that are less than perfect - eg the income you declare compared with what you are applying for. In other words, it's all rather grey.

I wouldn't worry at all about going above your credit limit this time. Within a few months it will fade away to nothing in terms of your credit history. I have a free Experian score via Barclaycard. It was 998 (out of 999) for a while. A missed payment was recorded and it dipped to 884 but 4 months later is has recovered to 996. I don't take these scores seriously and Experian don't lend money. But that's how they view it FWIW.

    A missed payment was recorded
Aren't you a vocal opponent of using direct debits for paying credit card bills?! (apologies if I've mixed you up with another poster)

Yes, it's me. In this case I was paying off the balance on expiry of a BT deal. I sent the money to my mother's Barclaycard account by mistake. (She was in hospital and I'd previously paid off her account and forgot to change the number back on my internet banking.) I sent a further payment to avoid a late payment (which arrived in time) and phoned Barclaycard. They said they would transfer the money from one Barclaycard to another and confirmed by letter (to both of us) the day on which they would do this. They didn't do this. I called them and they said there as an error on their part and they would do the transfer right away - this still left time before the next payment due. They sent a further letter to say the transfer was done, but this happened several days later. But in the same letter they said the late payment charge had been refunded (it was) and no negative information had been recorded (it seems it was).

The other occasion when I had a late payment marker was whilst I was overseas. Some fraudulent transactions (£6800) went through on an otherwise dormant card. By the time I came back, there was interest and late payment fees applied. Eventually everything was reversed, but again the CC (this time Nationwide) didn't remove the late marker, though they said in a letter that they would.
