Hi,

Sorry if this has been covered but I've scoured the site over the last two days and can find absolutely nothing on this!

I married in October. We haven't planned a honeymoon yet and my Passport only has 2 years left on it so I didn't see the point in hurrying to change it over to my new name. Plus I don't think we've had the certificate in the house for longer than a week since we got married with all the issues I've had with everything else!

Anyway, I've booked a short trip away and would like to buy Travel Insurance. Only problem is, everything to do with the trip is in my maiden name thanks to my Passport - EHIC, Hotel, Flights - but I'm registered with my Doctor in my married name. So what do I buy my Travel Insurance in?

Probably a really simple one but you can never be too sure nowadays, and with the hassle I've had with such simple things like my banking I don't want to run into anymore issues over a name!

Thanks :)

I would suggest using the name in your passport as that is likely to be what is checked to verify your ID should you need any medical treatment while away. I don't really see what the name you're registered with at your GP has to do with it at all.
  • Hi,

When going through quotes ones of the things they specify as a necessity is that you're registered with a doctor in your country of residence, otherwise you can't get travel insurance or there would be issues with claiming if you did. This is the main reason I'm querying it as I'm registered in my married name, and I presumed my NHS/doctor registration would affect any claim made.

Maiden name it is though, unless something has gone horribly wrong they'll have my previous details on file from before I married, just might take a bit longer to find me.

    Thank you

Take your marriage cert with you just in case you have any identity issues on holiday.
  • From https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/453592/passportsnewlywedscivilpartnershipsPD1.pdf

"If you hold a valid passport and don’t want to replace it with one showing your new name, you can continue to use your current passport and take your marriage or civil partnership certificate with you when you travel. However, some countries may insist that the details on your travel documents match those in your passport. HM Passport Office advises you to check with the consulate of the country you will be travelling to before booking your holiday."

Same logic is your GP's record will show the update of details...you are despite being married the same person :-)

I'd go with name on passport for insurance as that is what the hospital would crosscheck if you are unlucky enough to end up there.
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.
