Defaulted payment - mortgage ....

Hi,
Me and my boyfriend want to get a mortgage next year which he has never had one (I do have now). My rating is pretty good but his is in the mid poor area with a defaulted account of £715 from Lowells portfolio. He thinks his ex took it out in his name when their boy was born in June 10. The account was defaulted in jan 12 and so I am wondering do we wait it out to see if he gets no ccj by Jan 18 or is that risky? The main issue is that they (him and his ex) set up no postal redirects so even if lowells warned of a ccj he wouldn't know about it and I'm worried even with my good credit report a mortgage lender may still look st his and decline especially if he got a ccj. What is the best course of action? I've heard of those prove it letters but unsure of how it actually works and if that would be the best situation. I have suggested if he has to pay it then we will do that to ensure his rating gets better. Thanks in advance.

If it's not his, dispute it and report it as fraud.0

But they were together then and she went bankrupt which I'm thinking is the reason why he said she did it in his name. Does that make a difference?0

After asking him again he now is unsure whether she asks his permission or not. I feel uneasy saying it's fraud as his memory is terrible haha I suspect he did know ....0

In which case he needs to contact the ex and tell her to pay it (assuming it wasn't for items for their family), or contact the creditor and pay it himself.0 -
Lowell have obviously bought the debt. Is there nothing on his credit file that indicates who the debt was originally with?0
