Virgin Media £25 credit check

I began the sign up process for the VM's 50mb package earlier today. I stopped my online transaction early when I discovered the only available dates for installation were before I move in to my new home.
Got a call back today to continue where I left off, and did so. Got to the part where they run a credit check, and they told me that I would have to pay £25 for it, which would be debited from my first bill. I was put on the spot with this news, so I told her to ring me back tomorrow.
I find it strange that this was the first I'd heard about a £25 fee. Couldn't find anything on Google, apart from a post dating back almost 10 years on this very forum. Does anyone else have any more info on this? I did google the telephone number and it's all legit.
I've previously failed credit checks because I don't really have any credit. Quite funny considering I've been accepted for a mortgage from my bank... Hopefully it won't be an issue with VM.
Edit: Just done a bit more digging in to the number, and there seems to be mixed opinions. Never like giving personal details over the phone, especially my bank details, so will probably just continue this transaction online... The number is 02037062803
