Help!! Letter before court .....I had a permit

This is from June.....I work at a hospital and buy a monthly permit, I got 4 tickets for June....I appealed them (sent of 4 forms giving permission for parkingeye to look at something, no idea what) I got 3 letters saying ticket cancelled.....I forgot about the 4th until maybe a month later I got another letter saying 1 ticket still needed to be payed...I called them told them I had sent the form they asked for and that they had cancelled my other tickets etc they said I need to appeal each ticket separately and that they didn't recieve my appeal for this particular one, anyway I get irate and hang up, probably shouldn't have as now they have sent me a letter before court, I responded to it and sent the receipt for my permit, I've received an email today stating they will still pursue it as I didn't appeal to POPLA? I've only just found out what POPLA is, they didn't send me a code...basically I'm a little worried now, what happens when they take you to court? I'm I going to end up being out of pocket? Do I need a lawyer? Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, I've never been taken to court before. Thanks
