Should I downsize car?

I had a Focus 1.6 petrol auto, a Titanium, for 3 years (Motability) and I was mostly making short journeys at the time, which was between 2011 and 2014. I never got less than 36 mpg though, I don't understand why you cannot manage more than 30 mpg. If I can make a suggestion: find a clear stretch of 60 or 70 mph road and give it an occasional blast, and/or take it to a garage to see if there is a reason.

Although, from 2001 to '04 I had a previous Focus 1.6 auto, a base LX model, which was a much better car than the later model and which gave me around 38 to 40 mpg.
