I hate offices

For the past few years I've felt like such a complete failure -bouncing from temp job to temp job. Often very well paid, but the thing is I start to feel so stifled/depressed after a while, and at times it's gotten really bad. The one permanent job I had in the last ten years, I left after 8 months due to what was basically a nervous breakdown. I always work hard, and have been told I'm very efficient, so I promise you I'm not lazy, and there are other aspects of my life I also work incredibly hard at. But for some reason, when I'm in an office job for too long I start to feel like I'm in prison.

I have an interview next week for a teaching assistant job as I used to tutor children and I loved that. So I'm hoping maybe I've finally found the path for me, otherwise I don't know what I'll do.

Are you actually qualified for the position? IE do you have a level 2 or 3 qualification?
  • No, I don't have a TA qualification.

You do come across as very fraught/ anxious. Have you sought help for this, seen your GP or some counselling?

What is it about office work that makes you feel like you're in a prison?

I wonder if you're looking at work in the wrong way. You work to live, not the other way round, if work feels bad then you get through it knowing that come 5pm the rest of the day is your own. Perhaps look at what is going on in the rest of your life to see if that is also affecting your outlook.

Well without being funny you wont get the job then.

I'd suggest you look at local courses which can offer you this. From experience it's 1 or 2 days a week + a placement.
  • Thanks for your advice, but I'm working through an agency who like my qualifications and experience. TA jobs don't require specific qualifications - so thanks but I'll trust the agency's advice.
  • I think it's just that I'm not suited to an office environment and mundane work. I'm very creative.
Rest of my life is fine - I just don't want to be someone who waits for 5pm to come before I start getting some satisfaction from my life.

Become an adult education teacher? But that may also need qualifications.

Thanks for your advice, but I'm working through an agency who like my qualifications and experience. - So? Are they offering you a job? Why would a school hire someone with no experience and no qualifications when there are literally thousands of qualified TAs looking for work? TA jobs don't require specific qualifications - so thanks but I'll trust the agency's advice.

No they don't. But they are often oversubscribed and hiring someone who jumps from job to job with no qualifications would be madness for a public sector organisation.

It's much easier to do the training for qualification for TA if you are working in it so say at interview that you are very keen to do a course and would love to have the job to assist in this.. etc.

Wow, a lot of pretty broad judgements about people who work in offices there!
Lots of 'creative' people work in offices, not all office environments are the same and not all office work is mundane.
