MDF shelves, do I need to paint them?

I have built shelving in the loft room and wonder if I can just leave it unpainted. They are in an insulated section off the bedroom, though there's a stud wall separating them from the heated room.

Are there any problems that might arise if I just leave them untreated? Any painted surface isn't going to be visible and will just get ruined with moving and storing stuff on them.

Personally I'd slap varnish on them - (not water based) - any unheated space is likely to have a high moisture content and we all know MDF HATES damp....
