2 People with same land line number?

I have had my current landline number for almost 5 years.

I keep getting calls for the same person who doesn't and has never lived here.

My first thought was they have mixed up 2 numbers, my number ends eg. 122 and the one they want is 112 but this has gone on and on and they insist they are correct in ringing my number and it is allocated to someone else as well as me.

Who do I contact to try and get to the bottom of this?

Have you tried calling your own number from your phone or another phone?

Your own phone should give an engaged tone, another phone should make it ring.

We used to get regular calls for Co-Op Travel as two of their numbers had the same three digits as ours with the same last three, too, but in a different order. Even their staff phoned us by mistake and one customer call was at 3am, demanding to know where the airport coach was.

We also got a regular call from an obviously old lady, calling her friend. Sometimes, she'd call, be told it was the wrong number, then try two or three more times. This went on for about a year, as she didn't ask the correct number, didn't write it down or had a problem reading numbers correctly.
  • Remember its also possible to have the same last part of the phone number but with a different dialling code. Eg. 01234 123456 , and 03456 123456 so maybe the caller has the wrong dialling code.

It's not likely that the same number appears twice, it's not impossible but would have to involve two providers (say BT and Sky) and a messed up number port , it's much more likely (especially as you say the call in error is from the same person) , that they were either told the wrong number for the person they are trying to contact, or they noted it down incorrectly, that would result in them being 'positive' they called the 'correct' number but were calling your number and obviously getting through to you.
Simple solution would be to just I gnore any calls from that person (presumably if you have caller display you will recognise the number they call from) or block calls from that number at an 'exchange' level by using your service providers 'call management ' facility's or by buying a call blocking phone.
If you didn't want the potential expense of a new phone or paying your provider for the facility to block a number, you could report it as a nuisance to the police, then your provider should arrange blocking free of charge
