Plaque control for dogs

Options
I feed my dogs a raw diet but still their teeth have plaque on them. One of the dogs will let me clean his teeth, the other (a rescue) won't.

I am sure I read somewhere that there is something you put in their drinking water which softens the plaque to make it easier to remove and also prevents more forming.

Does anyone know what it is called and if it is any good. Or do you know of anything else that works?

    Hi Catkins,

I have started using a product by Tropiclean, clean teeth gel.
The lady from the groom room at pets at home recommended as I have 2 jrt's, one with bad plaque.
She said it's what they use.
I was quite skeptical but I can say much to my surprise it does actually work.

It's quite pricey but it does work (and you don't need to use loads either).

Use it once daily, then when the plaque is under control you can reduce to 2-3 times a week (or what ever you prefer).
We've been using it for 2 weeks now and it really has made a massive difference.

You can get it online, amazon /pets at home if your no where near a pah.

PlaqueOff is another product for plaque, it's seaweed based. I know some people just buy the specific seaweed, not marketed for plaque, which can be a bit cheaper

Ive started to use Logic Gel for my two. Neither of them are very keen on having things stuck in their mouths... and yes ive tried.

I just put a blob in their food bowl after they have eaten and they lick it off.

Just ordered the Tropiclean from Amazon- read the reviews and they seemed good. Not sure if my dogs will like mint flavour!

have used Plaque Off for years but it's not totally worked- maybe I need to use a combination of these two.

My girl has to have a tooth out in the next couple of weeks (and I assume they will scale as well) so after that will be trying to keep her teeth plaque free.

I was recommended a product called Fragaria from dorwest and herbs. It's approx £7 for 100, I started using it just over a month ago on both of my dogs - it was suggested to let the plaque soften then scrape it off but I haven't touched my dogs teeth and the plaque has just fallen away, their back teeth are amazingly better

Tropiclean gel arrived today- very very minty!

It was quite a struggle to lift lip and squeeze 2 blobs of gel onto the worst affected back teeth each side whilst the boy was squirming to escape!! Not sure just how accurate the dosage was in the circumstances!! I felt I needed 4 hands  Hopefully my delivery will improve....

Will see how we progress in the next 30 days.

Madam had to have 2 teeth removed yesterday so I am also hoping to keep those teeth polished after the £155 bill!

I used to have 4 cavaliers, one of 2 of whom loved their teeth clean and two who hated the process.

With the exception of Tropiclean, I tried all the products mentioned above for Izzy, with no effect, so the only way was a regular descale.

Joly, whom I still have (aged 14 next month) was the other brush hater and lost some teeth quite young, but then Fish4 Dogs fish skins because widely available and, until old age, the rest of his teeth and all of Teddy's were lovely and sparkly.

I always bought larger cubes or sticks, as size appropriate ones were swallowed instead of chewed.
