Not my debt worries

Options
I was hoping for some advice here, last night I received a letter from a debt collection agency asking for £600 odd on behalf of a power company we are no longer with.

We were with the power company back in 2015 at our old house and when we moved we paid in full and closed the account. I spent a long time on the phone last night going around in circles as they could not understand the letter either as they had a balance of 0 showing for me. (we also have proff of paying the final bill in our paperwork)

After further digging I was told by power company the debt was from the date after we moved as when we close the account they open up a new one for the new owner but for some reason only known to them they had my name on it.

Our next stop was the deebt collection agancy, who were despite my panic were very nice on the phone as I expalined what the power company had told me. They have asked me to scan and send in any paperwork that proves we moved when we say we did and they would then dispute the debt with the power company.
I have sent then copies of completion docmentation that clearly shows sale of old property the debt is against.

What is making me panic is that I have been told this apeal process can be up to 30 days, but Im worrying about my credit score as we are due to re mortgage soon and I dont want a debit that is not mine affecting my credit score.

Any one else have any experince of this, is it likly to affect my credit score at this point?

Who is the energy provider? Not all energy providers report to the CRA's. If the debt is from 2015 this would already be affecting your credit report. Have you checked your report?
You should ask them to prove the debt to you by asking for a staement of account.
