Help and advice for bank transfer scam needed

I recently saw a property advertised on Airbnb and made enquiries through their site. I received a response and was asked to what's app them. To cut a long story short, I went off the Airbnb site and made a cash transfer payment for the property after I received an e-mail from an Airbnb address which contained its logos and invoice.

I have subsequently established that this is a scam. I have reported to my bank who are making enquiries and airbnb have confirmed that the Airbnb account was not a legitimate account but because I went off site there is nothing they can do.

Can anyone advise if I should report this to the police or if I should leave it to my bank to investigate or any other advice would be welcomed

Thanks

How can anybody take this post seriously?
You purchased a property online for cash, without viewing it, without any conveyancing, without a solicitor ....
    You must be crazy

I think you have misunderstood the original message and what Airbnb is
  • Your fault. Your liability.

Report it. Don't expect to see your money again though.
  • Thanks for the responses, I only found out from Airbnb last night it was definitely a scam. Now reported to police.

That is probably one of the most gross misunderstandings of an OP that I have ever seen on here. Please tell us you were joking...

This is quite a well known scam and lots of people have been caught by it. if you pay via the airbnb website itself then you are covered (a bit like if you pay for things by PayPal you are covered) however some people advertise property and ask you to pay for the rental by going outside the airbnb website you should never do this because of course it is almost always a scam and you're never covered
