Advice needed re:non-payment of student loan

I'm hoping that someone can help. I took out student Loans in 1995 and 1996, which I have always deferred and now owned by Thesis. After a period of poor physical and mental health three years ago, I failed to defer and have been avoiding them ever since, terrified that they'll force me to pay back the sum owed. I appreciate that this wasn't the best way to deal with the situation and now determined to sort out. I'm now employed, earning less than the national average and understand that I can defer from this point. My anxiety needs to know what will happen to the arrears I've since accrued - can anyone provide some insight?
