Brilliant ideas! We have some guests coming at the end of the month and after a VERY expensive car service I need to entertain inexpensively. The cheese straws sound a good idea whilst watching the rugby!

I thought I might use the redwine and redcurrant jelly with some brie and bacon with some sliced potatoes layered up and baked............might be a disaster though.... and we haven't got too much in the budget if it goes wrong. Any thoughts as to whether you think it ,oght work?

How many are you cooking for and who? Like is it a group of mates who are going to be drinking and watching the game or is it a sit down dinner?
  • After reading all the suggestions, I wish I had leftover chutney:D
i didnt make much before christmas, and its all gone now:(

Chicken fillets or portions. Add a spoon of yogurt to half a jar of chutney and pour over the chicken and cook in the oven. Yummy.

I too adore red onion chutney and pickles and usually get the left overs that my eldest dd doesn't use up at Christmas so I rarely have to buy much until around Easter I will eat it in salad or on any meat dishes and even chuck a bit into a curry

It is an old friend who is staying from Friday through to Sunday. There will be 3 adults and 3 children . Likely to be a few beers on the Saturday and then something I can have already prepped. Don't mind cooking on the Sunday as I will have more time as the kids don't have clubs etc on.

I've got tomato and chilli chutney could I add that to the yoghurt?

The apple and pear chutney I think I'm going to do in cheese straws.

Thanks for your ideas, I'm loving the wisdom on here......

Keep them, they don't go off - you'll have them ready for this Xmas if you do that.

Add a note to your Xmas list for 2017: "DO NOT buy chutneys you don't eat them"

Also, as said above, sausage rolls benefit from them - or even a spoon of chutney alongside any fried/baked sausages and mash.

I use chutneys as dips for tortilla chips etc, and even stick them on the side of a plate of chips. Tomato/chilli I use as a homemade quick pizza base.

Ok So what I do when I have a drinking weekend of guests is

Picnic food with the drink and that match. That's hot sausage rolls ,chicken drumsticks, coleslaw, cheese, bread, CHUTNEYS, salads , pizzas etc. Nothing that costs a fortune, just food that the whole family can sit and eat sitting in front of the tv

Or I do a big curry/lasagne/chilli, and then make sure there's nibbles for the picking off

Then the morning after, depending on leaving times and kind of hangovers expected, it's either a full English ( Ulster here) or a roast chicken dinner. Chicken can be cooked Day before, veg can all be blanched day before as well

When I have certain very heavy drinking friends it's the picnic food and breakfast deal :)
  • That sounds like a plan. I will have a go at using all of my chutneys in some manner. Maybe some chicken skewers with the tomato and chilli chutney.

It'll be an Ulster fry here too Suki1964!! I've had a go at making wheaten bread but I cant seem to get the right flour but the potato bread has come out quite nicely!!
