Additional or mutiple Travel insurance

I have just purchased Travel Insurance with medical conditions declared - but the cancellation cover per person is only £5,000 and the holiday we have booked is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and so is going to be a lot more expensive. To increase the cancellation claim amount is going to cost more than the annual world-wide insurance policy cost in the first place. (they are quoting an extra £543 to increase the cover to £10K pp.) Seems like the majority of policies cancellation limit is £5K that I can find. Is it possible to take out an additional travel policy just for this one trip - not going until the end of the year?

Try this company, they're very helpful.

It would be best for you to give them a call, their staff are very helpful

I strongly recommend that you read all the terms and conditions
  • Assuming you are within your 14 days cooling off on your policy just bought...

You are right not many policies have a cancellation sum insured of up to £10k.

You are also right that a higher limit annual policy may oddly be good value, as the insurer figures not everyone will actually need the full £10k of cancellation. Whereas with a single trip or cancellation top up, they "know" the limit is chosen because it is needed.

Try P J Hayman as suggested. American Express also do high limit annual and offer online medical screening so you can compare. Or try Hiscox also available online.

It is interesting as on the continent - it is much more common to charge a % of trip value for cancellation. Typically that rate is between 4-6% of the sum insured, so your quote is about right.

The trick to use is if you can find that annual cover where the high limits are set more as a vanity thing as described above. IF so, you will likely enjoy cost effective cover.

Watch for maximum trip duration - you don't say how long the trip is...
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.
