Employed AND self-employed - Which to choose for Car Insurance

I'm both employed and self-empoyed - although my employed job is my main money earner. However, I'm getting much cheaper quotes if I enter that I'm self-employed. Can I just use self-employed on my car insurance, even though I earn more through my employment?

No
You normally have to declare your main job and any other part time jobs
You must tell the truth0 -
Oh okay, thank you. I've been using Compare The Market for these quotes, and it only asks for one job title... hence the curiosity.0

The comparison sites only work if you are a standard risk, with nothing out of the ordinary going on. You could use them to get a feel for which is the cheapest insurer for you, but then ring them and explain your job situation. You don't want to be in a situation where you've said you're self-employed but then perhaps have an accident on the way to your main employment. Or vice versa.
Also, if you are using your car to travel to different sites as part of your self-employment, or to carry tools/stock etc, you need to let your insurers know anyway as you will need to include business use on the policy. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
Hi, thanks for the reply. Interesting - my self employment work is based from a home office, so no commuting via car. My commute to my employed job is via train, so I would never be driving to work. Worth calling the insurer I think!
Thanks.0 -
Always best to call - that way you don't risk them declining a claim or accusing you of lying later on.All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0
