Both readings are in miles - I have the option to switch to either km or miles.
As above the readings when interrogating the ECU with a diagnostics tool will usually show the total distance in Km not Miles. No matter what the dash is set to.
Your guy that read the mileage stored probably didnt know that.
He read the ECU and it doesnt actually state its in Km either. Just shows the number. Was i correct in that your mileage was closer to 34,000 miles?
You may have sent a good car back for no reason.
It will be one of those that just runs and runs and runs.
It will be listed on ebay when its 20 years old as having 500,000 miles but runs great and never let them down. Just basic servicing and new tyres and brakes every now and then.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Notwithstanding the (very likely) mile/km confusion explanation, it isn't illegal to have a car with a wrong mileage displayed on the odometer or the MOT certificate. It isn't illegal to sell a car with a wrong mileage displayed.
It is only illegal to claim a wrong mileage is genuine. So, if the mileage is suspected to be wrong, then all the vendor needs to do is to say that the mileage is not warranted to be correct, and job's a good 'un.
Maybe, maybe not. I found this, who knows if it's accurate?
"Beware though, disclaimers cannot be used to hide behind. If you have information about the mileage, good or bad, you must relay this to the customer. You cannot 'blanket disclaim' neither can you turn a blind eye and not carry out the necessary checks hoping that the mileage will be correct."0 -

+1
You would need to show a level of due diligence as to how you've drawn that conclusion, and also what the estimated mileage would be.
Otherwise you could just start up a business selling clocked cars and putting up a disclaimer saying the mileage is not warranted0 -
Perhaps I was too brief when I originally posted.
I read the mileages quite easily by scrolling through the menu options using the indicator stick buttons...not a diagnostics tool in sight!
The car is an Audi A4. I can choose an option on the dash to display all mileages in either miles or km. Once I choose the option, all three mileages I can view are viewed in the same distance measure...it's not possible to be viewing one in miles and the other in km for example and mistakenly conclude that two distance readings are different, yet they are in fact the same (just shown in different distances).
There's three distance counts...the odometer, onboard computer mileage count 1 [or OBC1 for short, which shows the total journey distance since last reset] and onboard computer mileage count 2 [distance of current journey].
The mile readings at the time were 29,647 on the odometer and 54,598 on OBC1. KMs were coming out at 47,712 and 87,867 respectively. Obviously it's a bit odd that the odometer is reading less than total journey distance!!
I have no idea what the mileage (or km) was based on the ECU reading, as like I said, I didn't read using a diagnostic tool.
Hopefully this is clearer...but I sense the general opinion is to just move on from this???0 -
You made mention in your OP that the MOT mileage (I assume the only MOT the vehicle had had?) matched the lower 30k figure. Did the the vehicle come with a service history and if so how do the mileage figures on that stack up with suspected and purported figures?0

I find it nigh-on impossible to believe that in a car old enough to have an MOT, therefore >3yrs, the battery has never been disconnected.
Assuming the car is a B8 (2008-2015), page 28 of the U.K. handbook specifically states that the OBC data is reset when the battery is disconnected. I suspect an error has occurred somewhere, but I still very much doubt the car has been clocked. Get someone with VAS1551 or VCDS to read the ECU mileage counter (it will be in km) and work on that as being the truth.
And, as asked above - what do the history and previous MOTs show?0 -

By 3-4yo and 30k miles, it's quite likely to have just had one, perhaps two routine oil changes, and no more maintenance than that. There's no reason whatsoever for the battery to be disconnected for that. For more invasive maintenance - cambelt, or alternator/starter replacement, sure - but not for just servicing. The battery certainly won't have needed replacement.
So why would it have been disconnected?0 -

Well, if it was built between 2011 and 2014, there's a very good chance it'll have been subject to a recall for airbag inflators, and battery disconnect would probably be needed for that. Then there's the possibility of accessory fitting, such as a towbar, perhaps. Or maybe it's sat around on a dealer's forecourt and the battery has discharged at some point.
Who knows? There's loads of reasons it might have been disconnected - I just can't believe that in 3+years no one would ever have either reset the trips, or the battery might have been flat or disconnected. Put it like this, the chances of it being clocked these days are way slimmer than the chances it's never had the battery off.0
