I'm going to call them tomorrow to find out, but being the sort of massively impatient person that I am I wondered if anyone had any idea why we might have received a credit of £23 from SP, when we haven't been with them since August 2014..?
Not complaining obviously, just seems a little odd!

Keep in mind that this is Scot. Power who are certainly not the sharpest knife in the box when it comes to accounting
Good chance they will ask for it back at sometime in the future0 -

Probably due to this order by OFGEM in 2016 about bad accounting practises

Haha quite possibly!
After 30 minutes on the phone, they said that yes it was just money they still owed me from when we had an account! Which seems odd as I am usually very good at making sure I get back what I am owed when I close accounts - I guess I just wasn't on the ball in 2014!0
