Thanks Jellibeanz. Celebrating the milestones is the most important part for me.

Buying a house, unless someone is very lucky, is like climbing a financial Mount Everest. The biggest financial mountain most of us will ever have to climb. Do you get to the top of Mount Everest without any stops along the way? No, you go to base camp.

For some people, getting to base camp may be saving their first deposit. On this house, for us, base camp was getting under £100k. Since then we've celebrated £10k increments which come asround once or twice a year. We've also allowed a couple of more obscure milestones. A sentimental one for us was passing under the size of our first ever mortgage.

Its good to have intermediate goals. It makes climbing financial Mount Everest seem that bit more achievable.

Thanks beanilou. We are currently on a three year fix which expires Dec 2019. As the mortgage was designed to go to SVR after that, we've been paying less than that into the mortgage, but running an ISA alongside for overpayments. As soon as the fix ends and there's no early payment penalty, the final amount will be paid.

Why thank you Jo. At the end of this we will certainly be celebrating... Probably with every food and drink related emoticon known to mankind.

Time for an update. Much has happened in the last year, including my dad falling ill and dying. Consequently I haven't posted on here as it just didn't feel right celebrating.

However we are now on the home stretch. Next month will represent 10 mortgage payments remaining. It's a little bit more complicated in reality as we are saving to an ISA to avoid overpayment charges. Nevertheless,it is a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that every payment remaining will be 10% of the remainder paid off (or stuck into the ISA).

Being mortgage free now feels in touching distance, which is lovely.

  • So sorry for your loss, it certainly knocked the stuffing out of me when my dad passed away.

However on the news front - you are nearly there, and looks like a year early too - when reading i notice your target date was Dec19 - which is roughly the same as mine, now you have overtaken me - big style.

    Well done - so close . . .
