Moving to the UK

First post so please be gentle :) but I have been reading for a long time since seeing that Martin on the television.

I live in Amsterdam at the minute and I am looking to move in with my boyfriend of 3 years in the UK.

My ex over here used to hit me and abuse me. I escaped and now he is just hounding me to meet because he wants me under his control.

I've talked to my boyfriend and he agree's with me that it would be good for me to live with him. I work for the airlines so I can commute easily back to my home base.

I got a few questions. I really don't w

When I move over do I have to register anywhere?
If my name does appear on official registers where non-residents can find out where I am? Worried about my ex trying to find me.
I am with ABM AMRO at the minute will it be easy to get a UK bank account or would it be worth being added on to my boyfriends?

My mother doesn't want me moving over to the UK, She is worried things will happen or when brexit happens I will be deported. I can't tell her where I am moving to in fear she will tell my ex when he is being friendly. How do I explain?

Sorry if you can't understand, English is not my first language.

    Your English is excellent.
As an EU citizen you are free to move to the UK. You do not need to register anything unless you are claiming benefits, but you should register with a doctor and a dentist.

Why not look at sites like jobsite.co.uk or Monster to see if there are jobs you can apply to before you move?

I am sure your mother will be happy if you settle to a career and are safe in your personal life, after all it is very cheap to fly to Amsterdam from the UK.
  • Thank you helcat

I am a pilot so work isn't exactly short. I can fly with my current company until I get something in the UK.

I am not looking to claim any benefits, but thank you for the tip on the doctor and dentist. Would I pay after every visit or would I buy insurance like I do in Holland?

Is it easy to get a bank account or would I need UK papers?

    Thank you for your help

NHS dentists you just pay after you have been for an appointment, its about £18 (I think?) for a general check up, and most people go every 6 months or 9 months if you have good teeth with no issues. You can go private which you pay for yourself which is a better standard of dentist I suppose. Ive always found our NHS one to be really good though.

Same with healthcare - NHS is free but can have long waiting lists, companies like BUPA provide private healthcare whereby you pay £30/40 (thats a guess) a month and have access to private hospitals and facilities and extremely short waiting lists.
  • Thank you Loz

So I won't appear on any official list at the town hall that anyone can view? I wouldn't want my ex finding out where in the UK I am

I do not think there would be a problem setting up a bank account as a foreign national but the system here is that you only have one main bank account that your wages go into.
Here a page from Barclays (not recommending that bank this is just for info.

You could however maybe set up a savings account with a building society where you pay cash in and that would give you a cash card and the helpful things associated with plastic. You can probably use your credit cards here but make sure you do not get a currency fee.

I guess you need the usual identity doc- passport, birth cert, evidence of wages.

At the doctors we do not pay, but at the dentist you pay after each visit.

By the way if you are coming to the UK you had better bring an umbrella!
  • Thank you again Helcat

I already have umbrellas packed :)

Just worry about being found now!

Make sure that your User Name here isn't your real name. If it is, contact MSE and ask that they change it. I'd also suggest that you edit your posts and remove the mentions of where you are now and what you do for a living.

    Other than that, good luck!

If you want to vote or get a credit card it might be a good idea to get yourself on the Electoral roll but as Pinkyshoes has said it will give you the right to vote in local elections, makes it easier for finance purposes I believe. No 1 knows what will happen when Brexit is finalised, in any case its not for a while.

You only need to put your name on the electoral register if you're entitled to vote, which you won't be in the general election, only local elections. That's really the only official list that is searchable by the general public that we have.
Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear
  • My name has been changed but thank you for the concern :)

So I can register to vote in the local elections? I guess thats for the politicians that tell me how many times the trash is collected?

So anyone can search this list? or is it just people in the UK?
