Defaults

Options
I got a copy of my credit file. I have a default. Why do they stay for 6yrs? Who decides that? Is there anything I can do to remove it before 6 yrs ? Also if you enter into an agreement with a creditor to pay a set amount is this a default?
Thanks :)

    Legislation dictates the 6 years.

A payment plan may or may not result in a default.

Is the creditor the original owner who placed the default on? By paying a set amount, do you mean a settlement figure (e.g. partial amount of original debt) or plan to pay it off. In either case it won't remove the default unless whoever put it on agrees to taking it off.
