Blue snake, I mean that the computer does form the log in page, with the cursor just waiting for the password digits to be entered. Except that I can't see it! Enter the password, and it produces my Desk top, again, invisibly.
Anyway, Thank you all. New monitor required.

description is too woolly to arrive at a firm conclusion, how do you know it arrives at the desktop if you can't see it, from sounds?

before replacing the monitor, check the leads and connections, startup in safe mode or the bios screen, or plug in a tv with a vga input if you have one.

you've been planning a pc replacement for ages, so may as well buy a new monitor (or bundle) to suit that rather than the old machine.

If it sometimes works and sometimes not, presume you have checked the security of the VGA (or HDMI) lead between PC and monitor, sometimes they can work loose. I remember giving a presentation some years ago when all the slides in the PowerPoint presentation had a purple overtone. When I came to dismantle the units to pack up, I discovered that I hadn't tightened the screws in the VGA plug!!

Got a flat screen LCD TV? Plug your computer into that with the VGA lead and see if it works OK.
