My house was 7 figures, but still there are many compromises. In the end it boiled down to not caring what the house was like as long as we had 3 bedrooms and a big plot, in the right place. We have 2 acres in our ideal location, but the house has a bonkers layout, everything needed repairing when we got here.....

2 years on and we haven't seen anything else come on the market we would have considered buying so we are very happy we chose the right compromises.

Your experience sounds sound like ours, although our budget was much more modest.

Seven years later, the bonkers layout has gone and almost everything is new. In another year or so we'll be down to tweaking.

My greatest regret is that I can't have a lake, but making one of those on top of a hill is a very tough call!:rotfl:

    Ooh...I'd love a lake as well....sighs....

Subject for debate as to what we would really ideally like all else being equal.

My starter for six personally would be:
    - in my home area (but not bang in the centre of "lotsa extra people are going to move in" territory)
    - private/private/PRIVATE
    - really detached (check - got that)
    - in a normal road (ie adopted by Council/proper obvious boundaries to my property/etc)
    - absolutely NO noise at all other than natural stuff like birds etc (and no I dont mean seagulls)
    - perfect air to breathe
    - 3-4 bedrooms/2 bathrooms/conservatory/garage and all rooms perfect shape and size
    - good neighbours
    - absolutely no aircraft routes or road traffic routes nearby
    - safe (from potential terrorist attacks/pollution incidents/etc) (check- got that - I think).
    - nothing remotely polluting nearby
    - over 400 "metres from the nearest watercourse" (thinking of insurance companies) and not the slightest risk of flooding ever from any cause
    - attractive setting and me "owning the views" (to use comment from Davesnave about what is necessary to protect my views)
    - normal climate (to me that means West Country England then:rotfl:)
    - everyone nearby with similar values (or, at any rate, "near enough"). It does make a huge difference to "comfort levels" imo. Whatever way one looks at it. So mine are = People are in there for the long-term in their homes/look after them and do whatever work is necessary to them/think in broadly similar ways/quiet/responsible/etc.

I could probably think of a lot more....:rotfl:...

Now laughing at thought that it's so hugely difficult to "get the lot" on Planet Earth that I'll probably have to wait another 30 odd years to get all that (ie after I'm dead...) because it's deemed to be such a Huge Ask on Planet Earth to have that - even though it's "no big deal" and everyone should have that imo.
  • I have lost out of 2 houses now. houses are not coming on the market and the good ones are just getting offers over the asking price and out of my reach. its just too frustrating and feel like i will never get the house i want. At the beginning, it was fun looking for houses but now its just making me depressed.

What level of survey have you had done? Was it a building survey? Have you been told that underpinning maybe required in future, or that it is inevitable?

It would be worth getting an opinion from a second surveyor also.

A slight subsidence is to be expected in the London area, the house I am in now has a few hairline cracks, as do many in the street. It didn't put me off buying it.

The problem can be when the house has been underpinned, and you want to sell it. Insurance then gos up and banks can get fussy with mortgages. That still doesn't make it impossible to sell though, but it might take a little longer.

Get a second opinion and don't be too hasty about backing away, it can be hard to find a home you like at a price that is right.
