As soon as your neighbour took possession of the parcel it became their responsibility to look after it.

If I threw a briefcase full of drugs into your garden, have you then 'taken possession' of said drugs?

You would have to explain to the police why it was in your garden
Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring

In 90% of the cases I've had a parcel sent to me I never find out who the courier is.
So are you seriously trying to say that in 90% of cases you've never had any tracking info? You either don't get a lot of parcels delivered or you don't pay enough attention.

No but how would you explain walking down the street with the briefcase?

I get most of my parcels delivered to work now, as royal mail have a tendency to leave them out in the rain in full view, or if items require a signature forge my signature!! 2 cases on tracked deliveries that the Signature can be viewed (and no doubt on other signed for items).
At least if the items arrive at work on my day off they will be put somewhere safe untill I get there the next day. Rather than take the chance of goods being left out in the rain and my name forged by the postman on the 5 days I do work.

I disagree with that, it's not acceptable to leave it in the street.

Morally yes, but legally I can't see how they can be held responsible for something that they did not agree to.

Use Google* and discover the responsibilities of an Involuntary Bailee.

    OK.

Bailment is the transfer of the physical possession of property from one person, known as the bailor, to another person, known as the bailee. It is crucial to understand that the property itself is not being transferred, but only possession of it.

So I doubt that the act of dumping something in somebody's front garden would be considered a transfer of "physical possession" to the occupier of that property.

    As the above link also states;

Bailment only occurs when a person who is given goods is given them for a specific purpose...Those who find goods cannot be considered bailees as they are not entrusted with the goods for a particular purpose.

You could argue negligence, but that's an entirely different kettle of fish.

I guess your search didn't include the word involuntary. ;)

90% is probably a bit of an exaggeration but I'd say over half the parcels I order I either don't get any dispatch notification or if I do it doesn't include courier details.

It's unimportant anyway, it's still not the receivers responsibility to ensure the parcel arrives with them.
