The best approach IMHO is this:-

    - Ask the Dealer if the deposit is refundable if you do not buy the car.

    - If he says no, walk away.

    - If he says yes, but subsequently does not refund, report him to Trading Standards and also take legal action.

    Just so the OP knows.

He can't go direct to Trading Standards, it must be done through the Citezens Advice Bureau.
  • If the deposit is over £100 then your best bet would be to pay the deposit on a credit card. If this isn't possible then a debit card is the next best option.

Thank you all for your opinions.
The car in question would be a focus mk 2.0 titanium.

I do not own a credit card as I don't like to have credits (unless I want to buy an house), but maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea.

The easiest thing is not pay a deposit. There is simply no need.

It doesn't even guarantee you the car. If the dealer gets a better offer they would say sorry sir I turn it on last night to move it for you too see and the engine seized or another customer reversed into it so it's in a body shop in the next town etc etc
