PayPal

If I ever buy anything on eBay I use PayPal as I always thought it was the safest way to get your money back if there was a problem.

Recently I bought a small mirror and when it arrived the glass was smashed due to very poor packaging. I didn't realise at the time but the seller wasn't in the UK so it travelled quite far.

I contacted the seller and said I would like a refund. Instead of a refund the seller said keep the broken mirror and we'll send you another free of charge. The first one took over three weeks to arrive so I just wanted a refund and to forget about it. I didn't want a replacement.

PayPal said they could only issue a refund once the mirror had been sent back and that I had to supply tracking information. To send the item back it would have cost more than it cost!

So we hit a stalemate. I'm told to send it back if I want a refund. The seller doesn't want it back and to cap it all the three phone numbers I found for paypal were useless. Only one rang and was automated, no human to talk to.

Luckily the miror arrived and the seller had this time used a box to send it in instead of an envelope

PayPal only communicated by email and even then it was automated. I've decided to try and just use UK sellers from now on and will think twice before using PayPal again

What site did you buy it from? If it was eBay use their dispute procedure and forget about PayPal's procedures. If you'd used a credit card you would probably have needed to spend £100 before they'd do anything at all.

The seller did the right thing and learned by their mistake. If they hadn't I would agree you would have every right to complain.

Paypal have their procedures which are there to protect them from fraud and counter claims. But I agree these seem to be onerous in your particular case.

You have far more protection using PP when buying on ebay, so long as you follow proper procedures. Sellers have to accept payment by Paypal and can refuse any other form of payment (other than cash on collection). Did you exclude items outside the UK when searching?
