E-on

Registered for a smart meter installation on 20th December.

On the day, there were lots of problems and the engineer was there for 5 hours. Subsequently, it turns out that the meters installed were credit meters, not smart. A second installation is booked for 7th Feb to install smart meters. Have been with E-on for 10+ years, but this has left a bad taste. I had been thinking of switching suppliers to Robin Hood energy, which I heard were good, and I live in Nottingham. Quick energy check and I should save £90/yr. I like the idea of smart meters, but if I install smart meters now, when I change suppliers they may no longer be smart (correct?)

Any advice please, especially anyone in the business?

Thanks guys.

The smart meters may or may not be compatible. You need to check with the supplier you are switching to. This is the problem with the current version smart meters. They have been rushed out and are not compatible across all suppliers.

When they work, they are great, when do don't, you have to use them as you would a standard meter.

There is some talk that they will be upgradable in the future to become more compatible, but when this happens is anyone guess.

There is a version 2 smart meter due to come out. It is meant to come out later this year, however nothing is forthcoming as of yet. So it could be a number of years before it does.

In the mean time. You can get a smart meter, it will always work in either smart mode, or if a supplier does not support it, as a standard meter would.

Check with the supplier you wish to switch to.

If I understand corectly you have the choice between having a smart meter fitted or a £90/yr saving on your energy bills.

I know which I would rather have, £90/yr please.
  • I'm going to let them fit the smart meter. I'll then switch to Robin Hood Energy. If the meters aren't compatible, then I'll be no worse off than I am now. Actually, the latest Money Martin quote suggests I'll be more like £120/year better off. Win win either way. I'm a miser anyway. Still will be, with or without a smart meter.

    Thanks guys.
