If the ceiling is already bowing due to the new boards simply being screwed onto the old, I can't see that there is any option but to remove the whole lot and start from scratch.

How did you pay for the work? and do you have a detailed estimate and a receipt?

Okay, thank you. I guess they'll be coming down :(

I paid cash and was quoted £800 but did not get a receipt despite asking one.
  • It looks like you've been had big time.

Thought the one I had:mad: was bad enough. Makes the **** I had here look great in comparison.

I would doubt you'll have any chance to get your money back out of that pair of cowboys I'm afraid.

But - you can't be the only one that paid them a substantial amount of cash - and I'm guessing HMRC would like to know about them.....:p
  • Thanks, I appreciate how candid you've been.

I think I would agree. It also looks like they have slapped jointing compound over everything. If that is the case, it will be soft, easily scratched, and could be sanded to get a better finish (very, very messy though). If it was a ready-mix compound they used, wiping it with a wet sponge will take some of it off.

Jointing compound is OK for ceilings and walls in low traffic areas, but if you want something that will last, real plaster is the way to go.

Not what you want in a room liable to get damp.

Unless you want to go down the legal route and sue them, about all you can do is name & shame in the hope no one else gets caught out.

  • Thank you FreeBear. Another problem I'll be able to talk about not that I needed that many more reasons!

    This isn't Alcoholics Anonymous :p

But if it makes you feel any better, I also had a cowboy plasterer in to do some work the tail end of last year. Asked for flat smooth walls & ceiling. Got mostly smooth, but no where near flat enough, and the mess he made warranted a negative review. Ended up having to redo a couple of walls myself that were unacceptable on the basis that I couldn't do any worse.

We all make mistakes and don't always ask the right sort of questions when getting so called tradesmen in to do a job.

  • Highly recommended? By who - Rogue Traders?! That is an appalling mess. If I were you, I'd put the word out to make sure those @$$h0les never got any more work!
