Low cost car options

Low cost = Kia Rio or Carens, Chevrolet Lacetti or Tacuma; all low cost for what you get.
Except cars like that can often cost more to insure than a Ford or Vauxhall..
Got the little one a car last year and was offered a Rio for little money a 2006 car. The insurance was more than double that of a similar engined Fiesta.
OP fails to mention how far away the Nursery. Neighbours used to take their little ones to Nursery and school in the car. By the time they had strapped them in the wife was there already, quicker to walk.
A short journey like that a Passat wont be cheap.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

bike also an option if within a few miles. I have taken my little one to nursery on the back of my bike for the last 2 years, its great. I'm firmly of the belief that driving kids to nursery/school should be an absolute last resort.0 -

Yeah but is that 200 yards to the nursery and maybe a shopping trip or visit to friends or relatives to top up the miles or 14.9 miles to the nursery?
My journeys are mostly short and when taking the in laws to the doctors etc during the winter my diesel car got below 30mpg.
When the FIL had a stay in hospital the visiting times coincided with rush hour and my petrol car at the time did a best of 23mpg.
Do they want to be putting £6 a day in to do the school run? Is that what they think of cheap? Adding in the cost of tax and insurance also.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Thanks for the replies!
Im a cyclist for my sins, ive tried to work out the best way to not use a car but OH keeps giving strong enough reasons to get one. Personally id be happy taking the little one in a bike trailer but think ive scared the boss with too many horror commuter stories.
Nursery is about 10 miles away (my usual commute on my bike). OH works shifts. Pick up and drop offs will be around rush hour. Ill only be doing the dropping off 2/3 times a week but the extra car is for convenience (its very rarely financially justifiable to have a car.)
Theres a good chance this car will end up being the main car in place of the 207 thats why im thinking something a little bigger instead of cheapest thing that moves.0 -
Take the pram to a car supermarket and find the cheapest car you can in decent condition that it fits entirely in the boot of. Buy that one, or look on autotrader for a cheaper one.0
