I have 12 years no claims as a driver at the moment, but there is a possibility I will be getting a company car soon.

If I spend a few years with a company car and then for whatever reason need to buy a car and insure myself again, will these no claims still be valid or will I have to start all over again?

Apparently someone I work with has had a lot of trouble with this. Any advice appreciated.

Your existing NCB will generally be valid for two years from when your current policy expires - a very small number of insurers (currently CoOp seem to be the only one) may accept it for three years.

If you have a spouse or partner who also drives then you could preserve your NCD indefinitely by swapping the policyholders around, so you insure it in your name every other year. (You'll have to tell the insurer that he's the main driver, but this will not generally cause problems if you're roughly the same age and he doesn't have a much worse driving history than you)

Otherwise if/when you get a car of your own again in a few years you'll have to look for an insurer who will accept claims free years on a company policy to give you an NCB or pseudo-NCB, which is a bit more work than simply buying a policy from a comparison site, and may reduce your choice of insurers, but is not impossible.
