BANK PPI - No Unemployment Proof

Hello
I have been contacted by my bank to request any PPI charges but I don't know if I had any. They wouldn't tell me over the phone they suggested I write in although their initial letter arrived at my address out of the blue. How genuine could this be?
I have tried to get a copy of my unemployment back in 1990 to no avail. I was a full time Mum to my baby so I know I definitely was not working. DWP still have not replied to both my letters and when you call the number they tell you only write, as there is no telephone number for my query. HMRC sends you printed information about your national insurance contributions - something I did not ask for. A complete waste of time!
Does anyone know what I can do without proof?

The bank sent what is known as a CCL to allow them to time-bar the complain in the future, it's likely to be genuine.
Front line staff may not be able to see older systems, writing to them is a good idea
If HMRC send you printed info showing you were getting NI stamps paid for because you were not working, doesn't that show it?Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
