A compact WiFi camera that works with a remote shot type app

Options
I use a Sony DSC-HX10V to take good telephoto and low light pics that can be instantly transferred to an iPhone for social media via the WiFi SD card I put in the camera.

So pleased with this arrangement that I'd like to upgrade to a very similar camera but this time one with proper built in WiFi support, especially that allows a phone app to 'see' through the camera's lens via WiFi for composing shots.

I know that some Olympus cameras have this (and an accompanying iPhone app) but they seem too bulky/expensive. Any really compact solutions out there? I have checked quite a few models via Google searches but the specs never make it very clear if this remote shot option is supported alongside WiFi that is listed in the spec sheet.

Samsung Galaxy 2 Camera can do this with NFC pairing which sets itself up with its own wifi pairing to a phone via a Samsung app. Interesting camera - full Android implementation on a 5" screen and a 21x optical zoom front lens and popup flash.

Have you looked at the Sony QX series at all? These are stripped down cameras that are designed to be used with a phone so they have their own lens, processor, sensor and storage but no screen or much in the way of controls as they use the phone instead. They range from small sensor options with large zooms up to a 1in sensor (same as in the RX100 series) and an APS-C option with interchangeable lenses the same as the E-mount cameras.

Yes indeed I have seen these, decided that having to do the WiFi pairing every time you want to compose a shot is too much of a faff - having a separate camera works great with the WiFi SD card I mentioned works great and has given me the appetite for even more convenience.
  • How about something like the Sony HX90V?

    From Sony's website:
Wi-Fi® connectivity with iOS and Android™ smartphones for remote camera control and still/video sharing is easy. In addition to Wi-Fi support for connecting to smartphones, NFC technology (near field communication) provides “One-touch connection” to compatible Android™ smartphones and tablets. Users need only touch devices to connect; no complex set-up is required.

That's fair enough, I'd have a look at some of the other Sony cameras like the HX90V as recommended above. Looking at the Sony site, these are the supported cameras:

I've just tried it on my RX100mk IV and it worked fine for remote control, I use the camera regularly for wirelessly transferring photos. These are all the supported Sony cameras:

    NEX-5R NEX-6 NEX-5T ILCE-7 ILCE-7R ILCE-5000 DSC-HX400V DSC-HX60V ILCE-6000 DSC-RX100M3 ILCE-7S ILCE-5100 ILCE-7M2 DSC-HX90V DSC-WX500 DSC-RX100M4 DSC-RX10M2 ILCE-7RM2 ILCE-7SM2 DSC-RX1RM2 ILCE-6300 DSC-HX80 DSC-RX10M3 DSC-RX100M5 ILCE-6500

I've highlighted some of the ones in bold I think are worth considering for your use.

  • I have an Olympus E-PL7. I am not a camera expert by any standard - but I specifically bought this one for its performance in low light (with a budget of ~£300) - and I am very happy with its performance. It also has WiFi image capture and image transfer capabilities which work well.

The Sony HX60V and HX90V are the same size/weight as my old HX10V, nearly pocketable. I think one of these would fit the bill. Thanks for the suggestions!
