I've just replaced a failed HP MediaVault NAS with a Synology DS216J after the HP died.

On the HP I used JBOD over its entire life and never had an issue, however, I never had a disk fail.

With the new Synology I have installed 2 x 3TB WD red drives and they are mounted as separate volumes. I put music & video on one volume and everything else, documents and photos etc. on the other.

I'm not after the most technologically advanced system or the fastest, for me what matters is that I have backups of my files.

I have three NAS drives, a 3TB Apple Time capsule, a 4TB WD MyCloud and the 6TB Synology.

Both Macs backup to the Time Capsule my Linux machine backs up to the WD and then there are separate backups of the important files, documents and photos to the Synology.

I then have the WD and Synology syncing those file between them meaning that I have three separate backups of all the important stuff.

When you write it down it sounds clunky and over complicated but it works perfectly and requires no intervention and I've never lost a file.

I dont need any data recovery options. Nothing there than cannot be replaced so losing hard drive space for that is a waste.

The important folders are stored on the PC and NAS and also backed up to a 3TB external unit.

Price increases on the hard drives every GB counts :)

Maybe a RAID 10 setup when i remove all larger drives from the computers and media centre PC etc.

How reliable is the rebuilding of data? How long will it take to rebuild a 1GB file?

Not looked into the exactly how it manages to recover 6GB data from a 2GB drive? All wizardry and magic me thinks :)
