Harveys sofa falling apart

My Harveys sofa is falling apart and I'm not happy with their response.
I bought a corner Onyx sofa in March 2013 (It wasn't delivered until July).

My husband and I both work full time so the sofa has had minimal wear, but now the leather is flaking prominently by the head rests, the seats and where your feet go on the recliner.

Surely the purpose of a sofa is to sit on it? I emailed them with copies of original receipts and order number to state that this Harveys sofa wasn't fit for purpose.

I have now been fobbed off to one of two companies who will come out for an independent review - but only at a cost to myself.

I'm really shocked by the service. Sofas aren't cheap and Harveys must have to do more than this? I'm due to give birth in four weeks. This is stress I could do without.

Has anyone gone through the process or have any advice? Thank you

After three and a half years the onus will be on you to prove that the sofa was of faulty construction at the time it was made. If you can get that, then Harvey's will have to fix it, replace it or offer you a partial refund.

    Wear and tear isn't covered.

    Your pregnancy is irrelevant.

Thanks for the response. That's disappointing as I would have expected an expensive sofa to last longer than three and a half years. Is there a minimum amount of time they should last?

    No.

Everything is assumed inherently faulty if it fails in the first 6 'months. (And you haven't set fire to it etc)

After that is depends wildly on what it is.

Is it an expensive sofa, or a cheap sofa with a high price tag?

I would expect 15-20 years put of an expensive sofa before it started looking shabby.

Thanks for the replies. On reading the very small print on my receipt I now see it was 'bonded leather' (although the big print refers to Leather). After some googling I feel totally misled by Harveys and will never set foot in their store again. I suppose I must cut my losses. Can anyone recommend a good sofa company?

It's the manufacturer you really need to be looking at, and if you can afford it go for a more established manufacturer like Ercol. Pricy but will last for ever. Might be worth checking out John Lewis, we have a 10 year old JL leather 3 seater and apart from the old scratch inflicted by our cat it is still in excellent nick.

We have Ikea sofas. Cheap and cheerful, but they have lasted well and proved to be very hardwearing.

If you're having a baby, don't bother trying to buy an expensive sofa, just pick something up at Ikea and live with it for the next few years while watching your child use it as a trampoline, a dinner table, an art desk, a final resting place for tiny Lego bricks and general target for assorted bodily fluids.

We had a couple of cheap sofas and we eventually bought a decent set of leather sofas when our son was almost a teenager. They have worn well over the past decade, apart from the claw marks from the cats, they still look and feel almost as good as new.

We got them from a local independent retailer, they were about £800 each.
