Ofgem Safety Net Question

In the following (hypothetical) scenario would I have to pay any exit fees?

I have a 1-year fixed tariff gas and electricity contract with "Supplier A". Supplier A does not charge exit fees.

Supplier A goes bust, and Ofgem moves me onto Supplier B's tariff, as per Ofgem's safety net rule.

Supplier B charges it's regular customers an exit fee.

Question: Do I have to pay Supplier B's exit fee if I want to change supplier?

Thanks in advance

Hi. I think that has already be tested with the failure of GBEnergy. GBEnergy customers were transferred to the Supplier of Last Resort on existing tariff/contract terms. That said, it will down to Ofgem to make a decision should the event happen again as there is nothing written down about it in the various Ofgem documents that I have read.

I think it would be an unlikely scenario currently as it would break Ofgem's rules on fairer treatment that a supplier may not roll you onto a new contract with a termination fee without your express agreement.
  • That's good to know, thanks for putting my mind at ease footyguy :T
