Tomtom no longer giving map updates

Options
I bought my Tomtom Sat Nav about two years ago with Lifetime map updates they sent me a email this morning saying they are no longer and suggesting I should get a newer model, is this legal?

Copy of email...
Every day, at TomTom, we work very hard to bring you the best navigation experience ever. A big part of this work is to continuously improve the quality of the maps and software that your sat nav runs on. As a consequence, however the memory required to install these higher quality maps increases every year.

As we work tirelessly to launch new technologies and deliver a great customer experience, it has become clear that some of our first generation navigation devices do not have sufficient memory to store the newest maps and features available. For example the map of Europe is now more than 7GB and the average map size increase per quarter is 400MB.

TomTom solved this situation by dividing the installed map into smaller regions (Map Zones) which are available to download when a device is connected to the TomTom Home software. However, we foresee that in less than 6 months, even these smaller regions won’t be able to fit into your device.

For this reason, we have stopped sales of map updates and other services as of 15/11/2016. Your trusted device will still work perfectly but you will no longer be able to buy any further map update.

The latest generation of TomTom devices now come with Free lifetime updates for World Maps, Traffic and Speed cameras. Maps, services and software are easily updated via Wi-Fi without the need to connect to a computer. They are also the fastest devices we have ever built, with quad core processors and 16GB of memory (expandable via SD card).

  • I don't think this applies to my latest tomtom but to the one I had before, the idiots don't seem to realise I've upgraded!

    Yes it is.

You, like many others have misunderstood the meaning of 'life time' in relation to the SatNav.

It does not mean lifetime as in your lifetime or for however long you can keep your device working for.

It means only for as long as that particular device is supported.

I still have my very first TomTom in the loft somewhere. It still powers on and still works but the map is so far out of date as to be useless.

I also have two other TomTom devices, one in each car, the older of the two got it's last map update towards the back end of last year, there are no further updates for it. As soon as the map in there at the moment starts to give me trouble it will be retired.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.

I gave up on dedicated Satnavs quite a while back. The available SatNav choices on mobile phones are more convenient and have never let me down or got me lost.
They are advising you that your TomTom model has come to the end of it's useful life and can't keep up with the newer tech. So perfectly legal, but, I feel your pain....

The older devices still running Home can be updated very easily by unscrupulous people using information available on the internet.

When the term lifetime support is ambiguous, you can't wonder that people update that way instead of buying a new sat nav.

My friend got burnt with her Tomtom 30ish years ago too :(

Many people think that the free Waze app for mobile is really good.

It bad point is that you need a data plan as it keeps updating itself with the latest traffic updates and maps. Its POI camera warnings are not as good, and it battery hungry.

Good point is that the latest travel updates route you around blockages.

There are other which apps which keep the whole map on the phone and do not need downloads

The old one is obviously still registered. If your device updates with MyDrive you are not affected, if you update with Home you are so any device bought in the past few years is not affected.
