Not happy with Builder's Work

I've posted here before about the absolute nightmare we have had with the installation with our kitchen. The builders who finished the job have made an absolute mess of the floor tiling (very uneven) and the tiling behind the sink which looks like a 5 year old has glued it together.

The builder who did the work also decided to cut the power to sockets in living room to give power to the appliances he was installing in the kitchen and then didn't decide to tell us. After finding out, we told him and he said he wasn't able to do the repair but we agreed he would pay for the work if we got another electrician in.

After receiving the invoice, I am trying to give it to the builder to pay but he is not responding. He lives on the same street as us so I am planning to take it round.

We have paid the builder for the work even though we were unhappy and we pointed out their mistakes but he still wanted the money. Is it possible to reclaim the money back due to the work being substandard and how could this be done?

Why did you pay him if you were not happy?

    School boy error

We should not have paid him but as he lived on the same street on us I wanted to avoid arguments. This whole process has been a steep learning curve and we will not be making these mistakes again. I am however not worried about upsetting him now due to the way we have been treated. He should at least pay the invoice as promised.

That is a tricky one. Its going to be hard to get the money back but if the guy is a honest worker he will see whats been bad about the job and seek to fix it.

You now know to never pay for anything unless you are happy, you are never in a stronger position to get it resolved quickly when you say, 'I am not happy...there'll no money until the work is fixed properly'.

As for using a neighbour, best not doing so for these very reasons.... you have to see the git more often than not. And when you are on bad terms, mother nature will ensure you meet at every opportunity.

Agree, its been a steep learning curve! Our previous builder downed tools so we were in a bit of a tricky situation but I never expected he would do the job as badly as he did. Problem is stuff like the floor tiles have already been laid. How does he fix them apart from giving us some money back? He is ignoring my calls/texts now after going back on his promise to pay the invoice so I will have to go round to his house. I'm sick of builders like this getting away with shoddy jobs.

Only way to fix them is to rip them up, fix any levelling issues and retile.

That is a major ball ache mate.

I wish you every success, keep us updated!

Thought so but the tiles were expensive so unless he pays it will cost a bomb to do that. I will speak to CAB tomorrow to see what options are available.
