Student Bank Account

Any advice would be helpful. My daughter is in her first year at University. Before she went she applied for a student bank account at Santander. This was unfortunately declined, we think due to the fact that she had stupidly gone overdrawn by £13 and incurred bank charges. This was paid off immediately but we think this was the reason though Santander can give us no specifics. She has managed her bank account impeccably since then and we want to try and apply for a student account again before she finishes her first year. Should we try Santander again though they have said if she is declined this goes on her credit score or should she try a different bank altogether? Any advice to help her get out of this mess would be appreciated. Thank you

Declining an application doesn't go on your credit file, although the application/credit search will show. It probably won't have much impact all on its own unless you have multiple in a short space of time.

She can try again without it causing much of an issue. If Santander decline, she can always try another bank.

  • IMO one small indiscretion of going overdrawn by £13 would not result in a student account decline.
Have you asked her to check her credit files? - even at 18 a missed payment to say a mobile phone company can wreck a credit file.

According to 'Sally' at MSE you have to have an unconditional offer before Santander will give you a first year bank account. Obviously I don't know if this was the case for your daughter but it rules out Santander for the uni my daughter has chosen.

Depends on the bank's scorecard really. They may well not be inclined to offer more lending to someone who can't manage the £0 they already have. Or they may be forgiving.

I agree daughter should pull her credit file though.

For now. Once results are released and her University accepts her, the offer will change to unconditional.
