Holiday Insurance

Hi there,

I have a skiing holiday booked for next month, however my partner's father has a heart condition and things are a bit touch and go for him at the moment. Is there an insurance that would cover us if we were not able to go on the holiday or if we had to return early from the holiday? I'm struggling to find something as it is a pre-existing condition.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Laura

I'm not sure anyone would cover you unless it was a genuine emergency (death is usually the big one) if you didn't want to travel, and even then because it is known, I doubt anyone would. The risk profile is really high.

Most companies would refuse to pay out unless there was no pre-existing severe and significant illness, and I'm sure they wouldn't cover something that was known about at the time of policy inception.

What you're asking for is either going to be prohibitively expensive and as rare as hens teeth (probably cost less just to forgo it or pay for walk up flights), or not possible due to the pre-existing nature of the condition.

What you don't explain is why you wouldn't be able to go - I'm guessing the death of the partner's father would be the only possible reason, as you know how sick they are.
  • Hi there,

Thank you for your response, I thought this would be the case but thought I'd ask on the off chance.

It sounds as if you are thinking of getting insurance now- but presumably you have insurance in place already. In which case what exactly is covered?

Pre existing conditons are covered on insurance but it is more specialised and a dearer deal.

Do you already have travel insurance in place for the trip? It may be that they may provide cover if you have, but potentially only for your partner and not yourself (as you aren't immediate family with the deceased).

If not, that is going to be seriously difficult to find, perhaps a call to a few insurers may turn up something, as you don't say he has a terminal diagnosis, just a health issue - if that is the case, then they may cover it, but arrange it ASAP. Just advise them he has had some ill health recently but no terminal diagnosis and no expectation of death based on his current diagnosis and presentation.

    Hope it gets sorted.
  • No, I don't already have any insurance booked. Thank you for your help though, it's worth making a few phone calls on the off chance.

You should have booked holiday insurance the moment you booked the holiday, what happenes if you or your other half fell/tripped over a curb in the street and sprained/broke an ankle? you could have lost your holiday/money!
The golden rule is take insurance out straight away if not before hand.

Oops. Either insurance needs to be bought as the same time as trip or an annual policy, also it's a ski-ing trip which I suspect is dearer due to the very nature of the holiday.
