Paying my partner rent question

Hello,
I pay my partner rent each month as he pays the mortgage (which I am not on). Someone mentioned that I should pay him in cash as it would look odd that I transfer him £500 every month, and that anyone ever looked into it he might get taxed as a land lord?! Is this true?

No he would not get charged as a landlord, or renting out a room. As he is your partner you can transfer what you want each month.....however
Is it agreed that you pay him rent each month? I dread to ask, is there a contract?
Can I ask why you are not part of the mortgage? I mean you are paying a fair chunk every month? Do you know how much it is every month?0 -

There are many reasons why I am not on the mortgage; I don't really want to be tied down to a house, I didn't have any money for a deposit and I don't think i would get accepted for a mortgage anyway! Plus we have only been together for 1.5 years.
We I am paying exactly half of the mortgage and bills as we earn the same amount of money. Plus this amount is still the same as I was paying on my house share... where as I now have a 3 bed semi! :j0 -

For example in 5 years you split up and you walk away with potentially zero of what you have paid out. He stays in the house knowing that you have paid off some the mortgage for him.
Paying by bank transfer is a good starting point to proving you are paying towards the mortgage, etc. Pay by cash and he can always deny it all.
Please seek legal advice on protecting yourself in this matter. The lack of you paying towards a deposit is irrelevant.0 -

Ummm... Think very carefully about disclosing any more of this type of information here.
You risk receiving a stream of opinions on how to live your life, how to manage your relationship with your partner etc.
But I guess if that's what you want, go ahead.0 -
I Understand where you are coming from, I will probably look to go on the mortgage in a couple of years.
If before then we break up, then yes I will have paid slightly towards his mortgage; but that's only the same as renting... which is what I would be doing for the next 10 years if he didn't have a deposit saved

As explained, payments towards the mortgage, or indeed towards house improvements (eg if you paid/contributed towards the cost of a new roof, conservatory...) would give you some claim on the property.
If this is not a concern (no comment on how to live your life!), then it makes no difference how you pay him each month.
Partners are not tenants. I (tend not to) sleep with my tenants.0 -
To protect your rights, you might care to set up TWO standing orders: one specifically for your share of the mortgage, the other for your share of the bills.0
