Age Verifcation for eBay sales

I am looking to start selling some products on eBay that are for over 18s.
I have seen that I as the seller need to put in place a way of carrying out Age Verification checks on the people that look to purchase from me.

I understand you can add buyer restrictions such as only people with a credit card registered can buy something from me. Would this be sufficient to meet the requirements or do I need to carry out additional checks? if so how?

Has anyone had any experience of carrying out age verification for items they have sold on ebay.

thanks in advance for your help.

Technically ebay UK only allow over 18s to open accounts, however we all know that doesn't work so you are right to be cautious.

The problem is that there are very few over 18s only items allowed on ebay UK, no adult stuff, no violent DVDs, no alcohol nothing to do with smoking etc- so the place to start would be the restrictions to see if you can actually list the stuff you want to sell.

If your items are allowed it might be worth giving ebay a call as they might have some business advice they can give regarding your accounts, as I can't think of anyone you can manually set anything to exclude younger buyers.

for specifics, the adult (erotica) rules are here:

    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/adult-only.html

but be aware ebay rarely allow anything to be listed- regardless of their 'contact us for assistance, guidelines.

The only other over 18s items tend not be allowed anyway, and that includes knives of any description (I once got a warning for tiny Victorian fruit knives in a box). R18 DVDs are also restricted and or banned, they can fall foul of the offensive category here:
    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/offensive.html

If it is at all poissible to give any indication as to what you are considering selling then we might be able to suggest a different venue, but I do understand that you would probably prefer to keep your stock 'secret' as we are all competitors on here ultimately.

Adult items & Alcohol are now allowed.

I hate the Adult section being on eBay, although that is a personal issue.

My residential neighbour has started selling adult toys & foam wedge type positioning aids & their customers have been calling at our property & asking the wife if they could collect their orders.
One customer even invited himself into our house, went she went to get her phone to call me.
Spoke to the local authority, as its basically a sex shop & should be operated from a warehouse rather than their garage.
The LA said no, as they're classed as novelty products, with the hardcore stuff drop shipped from their supplier.

Thanks for the responses to date, but to clarify I wont be selling any Adult sex toys lol

I am looking to sell e-liquids which you can sell on eBay, but in order to protect myself as best as possible I need to ensure that the persons buying the products are over 18 years of age.

I thought that by selecting that only accounts with a registered credit card can buy my products then this would cover me as in the UK market credit cards are only available to people over 18 years old.

Has anyone used a company to do age verification checks?

Only certain verified business sellers are allowed to sell vaping items, I'll find the link about getting verified and post it.

Only permitted sellers can list e-cigarettes, e-shishas and related accessories. To become a permitted seller, please, submit your request http://programme.ebay.co.uk/new_categories.
Make sure your listing follows these guidelines. If it doesn't, it may be removed, and you may be subject to a range of other actions, including restrictions of your buying and selling privileges and suspension of your account.

    Thanks, that would be awesome.

But regarding the age verification, I assume I can do what I'm thinking and be fine. appreciate that this will drastically reduce my audience but will mean I'm on the right side of the law so to speak.

    thanks again.

Looking at that link you are going to need more than just a basic card requirement, they appear to need you to show that you have a foolproof business system in place for verification. Do you have any business advisors or backers that can assist with advice? It also looks like ebay will want to see your business history as well to assist in making a decision to verify you.

Ah ok, well that might be more difficult as its a new business venture for me.

I appreciate that I will maybe need to talk to a third part about how to move this forward and eBay advise I have found just tells me I need to do Age Verification checks, but doesn't advise how and I can't find much on how to do it from a google search.

Amazon insist sellers use UPS age verifed delivery on 18+ products or a simillar service so I imagine it would be the same on ebay
