Electric and gas

Hi All,
Not sure if I'm posting this in the right place but here goes...
Our gas meter is outside and electric meter is in the kitchen, on a wall we plan to knock down for an extension. Gas isn't too much of a problem but electric definitely need some moving.
I've looked into costs of moving the meter 1.5m to another wall and a minimum cost would be £750 with western power distribution. EON have stated that if it's being moved more than one meter, it's a major change and therefore, WPD need to do it.
Not sure whether I'm being blonde but couldn't I just opt for a smart meter and do away with the old meter? - it's very old and takes up quite a lot of wall space. We are having a complete rewire anyway so seems ideal to get the smart meter and get rid of the old meter.

A smart meter still needs to connect to the incoming mains cable where your existing meter is.LaurenHeath123 wrote: »Hi All,

In other words, getting a smart meter will not help you overcome your problem at all.0 -
Thank you! - I suspected as much.0

Can't you get it moved a metre at a time....0

Aylesbury Duck - I have thought of this but I'm guessing it's to do with the length of wire?0

Completely missed the point, maybe you should have said "meter at a time"?LaurenHeath123 wrote: »Aylesbury Duck - I have thought of this but I'm guessing it's to do with the length of wire?0 -
what do you mean? Sorry to sound stupid. I was told they wouldn't move it more than a metre because of the wire. Anymore than a metre and I would need to get wales and west utilities out.0

Posts #4 & #6 were jokes (maybe poor) but you already have the answer you need. You want to move your electric meter a distance of 1.5 metres and it has to be done by WPD which I am assuming is Western Power Distribution so give them a call and get a quote. Sorry to confuse the issue with puns!0

WPD is your only option by law I'm afraid. Though they can only charge you cost.0
-
Some suppliers allow up to 3 m tails, more than enough for your new set up. Problem then is your own sparky has to run all new cables from existing to new meter position.
Perhaps check again as to WPD wordings?
As said though if WPD charge for over 1m then that's it.The world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good. Napoleon0 -
Sorry!! just reread OPs post again re taking down wall.
The problem/costs will be not moving the meter, but the DCO the cut out box where the main cable comes in.
DCO and meter moved, then Ops sparky reconnects wiring as supplied.
If so £750 seems good price? The world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good. Napoleon0
