This bit from their site is the crucial bit, as has been quoted by me and Caz above...and the incorrect ticket should be submitted for a full refund via BSP Link
... Only the booking agency can refund a ticket via the BSP Link. The agency must submit the ticket to the airline for refund, and the process takes up to 28 days in most cases. This should mean the funds would be reimbursed onto the original card used as payment within 2 months. It's a drawn out process, but you should get the majority of the cost of the original ticket back.0 -
Dan and Daniel isn't obviously a mistake. People are named Dan. It's not necessarily an abbreviation. People being denied boarding for passport and ticket not matching is not uncommon.0

ok. i have just sent an email to the agent (globehunters) hopefully they will process it.0

does the agent have to process the refund.
The BSP link is the IATA Billing and Settlement Plan. It's how the industry manages the financial transactions between agencies and airlines.0 -
I wouldn't hold my breath if I was the OP, he didn't exactly book from an agent with a stellar reputation.
I get what you're saying about the agency, but the rules are crystal clear on the airline's website, and if they want to continue selling SAA tickets, they have to abide by those rules.Airlines can get nasty if an agency doesn't play by the rules, and in some cases, they will send an ADM (agency debit memo) to the agency concerned.

Had similar problem (almost ) spelt my wifes first name SHIELA,it is spelt SHEILA! asked Thomas Cook to change paperwork as only 12 hours since booking,no problem and no cost. The girl in the TA said she would not have bothered as it would not make any difference but did not want to take a chance.0 -

I forgot about this thread as the refund took so long.
I received all my money back less the processing fee(which was £95)
I am extremely grateful for all the help especially Blue264.0 -
Thanks to th OP for the update and Blue for the advice; I'm still surprised, because in 40 years of flying, admittedly not with longhaul carriers, but including often to Spain who opeatre an Advance Passenger Info system, I have always ever used "Alex" on bookings, not the full "Alexander" of my passport... and vever been knocked back by airlines including BA.
So I'm well warned! But then I'll probably never fly SAA0
