Entitlement To Council Tax Single Person's Discount?

Great! I'm in violent agreement then....
..... but paying the full whack on both properties seems somewhat unfair in this instance.
Nope, it's entirely fair & the law:

And, let me guess, if you HAD wangled a way to get the single-persons discount from your cunning plan by pretending to be living apart, would you have bought the extra TV licence so you could both have been able to watch tele?? Call me cynical, but I think we know.

You could always say that there is no furniture in it and as yet it is not fit for habitation and needs doing up. If it is not habitable and is getting essential work done before you move in some councils will give you a few months free of c tax.

Many councils have clamped down on this.

Our council now only gives a 50% discount for three months.

It depends on the local authority as to what rate they give (if in England)

I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

I asked a similar question on another thread before now. In my instance, a couple both had their own homes - one had lived in his for 45 years and the other had just bought hers. He continued to have all post addressed to his house, it remained fully furnished and exactly as it had always been. He attended his house every day without fail, to get his post, use his gym etc.... He stayed at the woman's house most nights. Every night except when he was away (he travels frequently).

I presumed they would both need to pay full CT, but asked for opinions on here. In the end, as the law abiding citizens they both are, they asked the Council, giving full disclosure of the circumstances. They got a written response confirming they can each have 25% discount at their respective houses.

Probably best to ask, particularly as you don't want to con anyone.

They will check this. The roof has to be off, floors up, walls coming down. It's not just decorating. If he's sleeping there, it's obviously fit for habitation.

I was just going to add that - needs to be (far) more substantial than a lick of paint and a new kitchen. They will inspect to make sure.
